The engine has a common-rail injection system comprising a high-pressure fuel system with a high pressure fuel pump (1) and a high pressure fuel storage part (3) that are connected over a pressure line (2). The fuel system comprises a control valve that connects the line with a pressure generator i.e. pressure intensifier (7), such that the generator is connected with a suction line that is opened in environment and connected with an air supply line that is opened in a pressure reservoir (15). The reservoir is interconnected with a suction tube or a combustion chamber (16) of the engine. The pressure intensifier is designed as hydraulic/pneumatic pressure intensifier. The control valve is designed as a 3/2-way valve. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a supercharged internal combustion engine.
