The method involves operating an accelerator (38) and brake pedals (42). An air supply to a combustion engine (30) is controlled over a butterfly valve (36), which is operated by the accelerator. A signal of a load sensor (40) providing information about a position of the butterfly valve and a signal of a brake pedal sensor (44) assigned to the brake pedals are evaluated in order to detect an implausible state. Malfunction countermeasures are introduced during detecting the implausible state. An ignition is cyclically turned-off as the countermeasure. The load sensor is designed a potentiometer, a contactless sensor and an air mass sensor. An independent claim is also included for an arrangement for operating a combustion engine.
