Coating material comprises (a) at least one binder and (b) a multiple of microcapsules, respectively comprising (i) a shell material made of a cell wall and/or a cell membrane, and (ii) at least one active substance included in the shell material. Independent claims are also included for: (1) Coating, preferably lacquer layer comprising a matrix material and a multiple of the above mentioned microcapsules, and at least one active ingredient included in the shell material, where the shell material is at least partially covalently bonded to the matrix material, and the coating is obtainable by (a1) applying the above mentioned coating material on a surface to be coated, and (b1) optionally, hardening the applied coating material; (2) preparing the above mentioned coating material, comprising providing at least one above mentioned binder, providing the above mentioned microcapsules, and mixing the microcapsules with the binder and optionally other components; and (3) a product comprising the substrate and the coating adhering at least at one surface portion of the substrate, which is prepared by the above mentioned method.
