The diagnostic and prognostic method involves arranging the sensor in a wear area of a wear-critical component of a displacement unit, particularly hydrostatic axial piston machine (1), and detecting a change of state of the sensor, particularly a material removal of the sensor or a change of state in the vicinity of the sensor by the sensor. The subsensors of the sensor are arranged in different wear zones in the wear area. A sequentially progressive wear of different subsensors is activated, and the degree of wear is determined corresponding to the activated subsensors.
