The LED lighting device (1) has several LEDs that are arranged within a total chain (9). The LEDs are distributed into the LED sections. The LED sections are interconnected in parallel with each other when a circuit unit (10) is in the lower circuit states, to supply a primary forward voltage. The LED sections are interconnected in series with each other when the circuit unit is in the high circuit states, to supply a secondary forward voltage larger than the primary forward voltage. An independent claim is included for method for operating LED lighting device.
