The present invention relates to a catalyst comprising a support made of olivine on which is deposited a layer based on a compound of the iron of the type obtained by impregnating the support of olivine with a solution comprising an iron salt, and then heat treatment. This catalyst is useful for carrying out the steam reforming of tars, in particular in the gaseous medium resulting from the biomass steam gasification. In addition, this catalyst can be used to catalyse on its own steam gasification of organic compounds derived from the biomass, while limiting the amount of the tars produced in the gas synthesized.
