A method for producing a composite plasma spray coating using the simultaneous introduction of a powder and a precursor charge in solution in a plasma spray gun, comprising the steps of a) spraying a powder charge comprising micron sized particles in a plasma spray plume; b) spraying a liquid charge comprising a liquid precursor solution into the plasma spray plume, the powder charge spray and the liquid charge spray being independently adjustable; and, by using steps a) and b), forming a surface coating on a substrate incorporating micro-sized scuffs corresponding to the powder charge and nanoscale scuffs corresponding to the precursor charge in solution, the scrapes of Nanometric size being formed by reacting the constituents in the liquid precursor solution within the plasma plume.
