The method involves continuously detecting clogging state of an actuator (12) of a valve by comparing a position of the actuator with a desired position and by comparing flow of recirculated exhaust gas downstream of an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve with desired flow such that a clogging indicator is updated. Authorization for a cleaning strategy is requested by a supervisor of an air regulation circuit of a thermal engine when a predetermined clogging state is detected such that the cleaning strategy is activated without waiting for an engine stoppage phase.
