The mechanism has a support bearing (2) including a fixed outer ring (3) intended to be associated with a housing, and an inner ring (6) to be rotated by a drive element e.g. belt, and balls (7). Another bearing (8) includes an outer ring (9) mounted in the inner ring of the former bearing, and an inner ring (10) integral in rotation with a shaft (1) and balls (12). A clutch includes a bell (14) and a plate (15) with reciprocal friction elements movable between an uncoupled state and a coupled state to allow the rotation of the shaft by the inner ring of the latter bearing. An independent claim is also included for a water pump for a car.
