The method involves initiating a rich mode corresponding to a decreased rate of oxygen gas entering a catalyst chamber (111) to improve the efficiency of an oxidation catalyst of a diesel engine system (1). A measurement value of a distance covered is measured, and the received measured value is compared with a threshold, where the initiation of the rich mode is a function of the comparison result. An estimated value of efficiency parameter of the oxidation catalyst is received, and the value of the efficiency parameter is compared with a threshold value. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for decontaminating a diesel engine system devoid of the nitrogen oxide trap (2) a diesel engine system devoid of the nitrogen oxide trap.
