PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liver-protecting agent obtained from Sedum sarmentosum Bge., a plant of the family Crassulaceae, medicines or foods for human or animals exhibiting a liver-protecting effect, and a new megastigmane compound prepared by separating and purifying extracted ingredients from Sedum sarmentosum Bge. PSOLUTION: The liver-protecting agent comprises the entire plant of Sedum sarmentosum Bge., an extract liquid obtained by extraction from Sedum sarmentosum Bge. with water, a hydrous lower aliphatic alcohol or the like, an extract obtained by concentration of the extract liquid, or a megastigmane compound obtained by separating and purifying the extract liquid or the like. The medicine and foods for human or animals contain the liver-protecting agent. The novel megastigmane compound is obtained by separation and purification of the extract liquid or the like.
