PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper sheet identification apparatus capable of reducing an image transfer amount upon picking up an image with high resolution and also reducing capacity of an image memory without compressing a bus band. PSOLUTION: The paper sheet identification apparatus comprises: a one-dimensional image sensor 11 which picks up an image of a paper sheet 30; a line buffer 12 which temporarily stores the image picked up by the image sensor 11; a step S13 of transferring image data with low resolution based on image data of the line buffer 12; steps S27 and S28 of determining areas A0, A1, B0, B1 to which image data with high resolution of the image obtained by picking up the paper sheet 30 based on the image data of the line buffer 12 is transferred; and a step S28 of transferring the image data with high resolution for the areas A0, A1, B0, and B1 in the image data of the line buffer 12.
