PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a silicon nitride sintered compact free from color unevenness and having excellent thermal shock resistance. PSOLUTION: The silicon nitride sintered compact having excellent thermal shock resistance contains neodymium and iron wherein the mass ratio expressed by FeSB2/SBOSB3/SB/NdSB2/SBOSB3/SBis 0.17-10. The silicon nitride sintered compact contains 0.1-0.5 mass% iron expressed in terms of ferric oxide, 0.05-0.59 mass% neodymium expressed in terms of neodymium oxide, 0.1-10 mass% in total of magnesium, yttrium and neodymium expressed in terms of oxide and the mass ratio expressed by MgO/(YSB2/SBOSB3/SB+NdSB2/SBOSB3/SB) is 0.5-10.
