A method of enhancing methanogenesis in an oil reservoir comprising microbial consortia and formation water. The method comprising the addition of nutrients selected from ammonium ions and phosphate ions, which are added in respective amounts above critical concentrations to effect enhanced methanogenesis. But below levels that are deemed deleterious to the microbial consortia growth. The method further comprising maintaining the reservoir under conditions such that the rate of methanogenesis is increased. And w here the concentrations of the above-identified nutrients are maintained at saturation levels.
