The present invention relates to a compact keyboard for the Vietnamese language and a method therefor. The present invention proposes a compact keyboard for the Vietnamese language, which provides key areas wider than those of a conventional keyboard on a narrow keyboard, thereby not lowering input efficiency, and a method therefor. The keyboard according to the present invention is configured such that f, j, w, and z keys, which are not used in the Vietnamese language, are omitted from a conventional QWERTY keyboard; the y key is arranged together with the i key having the same phonetic value as the y key; the p key is arranged together with the l key below the p key; and the x key is arranged together with the v key, so that seven keys, seven keys and five keys are arranged on the top line, the second line, and the third line, respectively, wherein the y key, the p key, and the x key are defined to be respectively input by pressing the i key, the l key, and the v key twice, and wherein f, j, w, z, r, s, and x, which are characters for inputting diacritical signs in accordance with the Vietnamese IME Rules, are defined to be input by the d key, the k key, the q key, the c key, the r key, the s key, and the v key (the same key as "x"), respectively. According to the present invention, it is possible to use key areas wider than those of a conventional keyboard on a narrow keyboard and to input keys by almost the same number of keystrokes as a QWERTY keyboard.
