A wireless transmit receive unit, WTRU, is disclosed. The WTRU comprises a non-access stratum, NAS, component including a session management, SM, component configured to manage radio access bearers, RABs, and a mobility management, MM, component configured to support mobility of the WTRU. The WTRU further comprises an access stratum, AS, component including a radio resource control, RRC, component configured to perform radio resource control functions for the WTRU; and a combined radio access bearer manager and packet data convergence protocol, RABM/PDCP, component configured to implement control, in response to commands from the SM component, the MM component, and the RRC, for radio access bearers, RABs, and radio bearers, RBs, jointly for transporting packet switched, PS, data.
