The method involves turning OFF the driving process of internal combustion engine by opening an automatic transmission, during specific operation mode of motor car. The driving process of combustion engine is turned ON by closing the automatic transmission during other operation mode. A target gear is determined in a connecting phase of engine during the transition from specific operation mode into other operation mode, such that the target torque of optimal gear is set as target gear during start time of combustion engine, if defined start time for connecting phase is not exceeded.
