The method involves connecting the engaged gear having a sub-drive train (8) to the internal combustion engine (2) by a closed clutch (5) during the travel of the motor vehicle, while an inactive sub-drive train (9) has another engaged gear. The motor vehicle is braked by closing another clutch (4) of the latter sub-drive train in an overrun mode of the motor vehicle. The gear engaged in the latter sub-drive train is smaller than the gear engaged in the former sub-drive train. A visual warning signal is outputted for the active braking of the motor vehicle.
