The method involves reading a detected impedance value (142) of a cathode (127) and/or an anode (125) of an electrochemical energy storage device (110), where the read impedance value is determined using a reference electrode (135) that differs from the anode and the cathode of the electrochemical energy storage device. A state (150) of the anode and/or the cathode is determined using the impedance value, where the impedance value is read by detecting a current flow or ion conduction between the anode and the cathode. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for determining a state of an anode and/or a cathode of an electrochemical energy storage device (2) a computer program product for determining a state of an anode and/or a cathode of an electrochemical energy storage device (3) an electrochemical energy storage unit.
