Improved system operation for telematics systems that use a battery

A vehicle telematics system repeatedly reports vehicle status, which includes the location of a stolen vehicle. Because wireless messages are transmitted over time, battery capacity will decrease when the engine is not running. As the capacity of the vehicle battery decreases over time, status messages are discontinued to increase battery life and therefore the time over which at least some vehicle status information can be obtained.
