The device has a display portion (14) and a lighting element (16) i.e. LED. The display portion is deactivated and the lighting element is activated automatically after a predetermined residual activation time of the display device. The activation of the lighting element is performed by continuous alternating control of the lighting element based on sine function. A control diaphragm is located above a drink issue portion (12). Lightness of the lighting element is increased during rising edges of the sine function up to respective upper apex. An independent claim is included for a method for operating a household appliance.
