Portable laser range finders include an objective lens that is arranged to generate an image of a distant object at an image sensor. The image sensor is coupled to a display that generates a corresponding displayed image that can be viewed by a user directly or using an eyepiece. A transmitter directs a probe beam at a target and a reflected portion of the probe beam is detected to estimate the distance to the target or the speed of the target. An image processor is coupled to the image sensor and the display to provide a digital image.
