The system has a memory (121) which stores an indexed color history comprising an entry storing a color value of previously coded pixel. An encoding logic unit in communication with the memory is configured to obtain the current pixel for encoding and to determine whether to encode the current pixel using indexed color history by comparing a color value of the current pixel with the color value of previously coded pixel. The logic unit encodes the pixel as an index value into indexed color history, when the current pixel is determined to be encoded using the indexed color history. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) method for performing image coding; and (2) product for performing image coding.
