Modifying an input sequence of temporal television signals to achieve a cinematic effect

A sequence of television images is modified corresponding to a nominal temporal sampling rate of 60 Hz. The images are modified according to a five-image sequence. The first image 1401 is unmodified; the second image 1407 is temporally shifted backwards by 30.9% of the time between adjacent images in the sequence; the third 1404 and fourth 1405 fields are interchanged; and the fifth image 1408 is temporally shifted forwards by 30.9% of the time between adjacent images in the sequence. In this way 60 field per second video fields can be modified to appear similar to 24 frame per second (film) projection and the appearance of cinematic projection can be replicated. The modification may be achieved by the use of a sinusoidal judder component. The temporal interpolation may be carried out via a polyphase FIR filter.
