Embodiments of the claimed subject matter provide a method and apparatus for supporting a Short Message Service (SMS) in the packet switching device. One embodiment of the method is from the user equipment, including the step of providing a request for the combination of the packet-switched (PS) service or a packet switched, (PS) services and circuit-switched (CS) services. The request includes an indication that the user equipment has requested a short message service (SMS), also does not require any other kind of CS service. Some embodiments of the method also, at the user equipment, comprising the step of receiving a response indicating whether the SMS service is supported by the PS domain.
