An aspect of this innovation relates to an improved system that can perform CE in conjunction with electrospray ionization (ESI) as input to capillary electrophoresis (CE) and mass spectrometry system (MS). Embodiments include MS-ESI in combination with additional elements to identify fault conditions associated with leakage currents, to verify continuity of CE connections, and to provide improved system protection. A current sensing circuit may be used with high voltage output from the power supply.
