An object of the present invention is to improve the energy efficiency of a regenerator, at least in part. The present invention relates to a regenerator comprising a bed of energy storage media placed in a chamber. The chamber includes a shell and a thermal insulation layer disposed between the shell and the energy storage medium. The thermal insulation layer comprises a structure defining a plurality of cavities, each cavity having a volume greater than 5 cm 3, at least a portion of the cavity being at least partially filled with thermal insulation. The minimum thickness of the structural material separating the cavity and the inner volume of the chamber where the energy storage medium is located is greater than 2 mm. [Selection] Figure 2
