The present invention relates to a rapid and eco-friendly method for biosynthesis of metal/layered silicate nanocomposite particles using plant extracts under neutral to mildly alkaline condition. The method is useful for biosynthesis of metal nano particles or nano alloys in high concentration with very good stability which can be stored for long durations under ambient conditions. Since the shelf life of plant extract is very low, an alternative method is provided in which the layered silicates are loaded with active components of plant extract by boiling the layered silicates in aq. plant extract and evaporating all the solvent or water. The residue is dried and pulverized to yield a powder which can be stored for a long time and used for reduction of metal salt solutions whenever required. And further, the invention relates to ultrasound boosted finishing of woolen textiles with a solution of metal/layered silicate nano particles and wool powder to impart functional as well as aesthetic properties to textiles. The wool fibres/fabrics (or any other textile fibre in any form) are subjected to ultrasonic irradiations from different directions to partially etch the fibre surface by bombardment of metal/layered silicate composite nano particles, to modify the surface topography of fibres and to impart multiple functional properties by depositing different metal nano particles over the fibres. The woolen textiles are preferably pre-treated with low temperature plasma and/or enzymes to improve hydrophilicity, reduce felting tendency, etc. Various functional properties can be imparted to textile materials such as antimicrobial activity, resistance to insects, UV resistance, static resistance, thermal insulation, moisture absorbency, etc. in a very eco-friendly manner.
