The invention relates to a method and a testing device for testing a speed-limiting system of a lift installation (1). When said speed-limiting system is operating normally, if a lift-car (3) is in an unacceptable motion state then a lift-car braking device (4) is activated by a speed limiter (5) braking a limiter traction means (6) which is connected to a trigger mechanism (11) of said lift-car braking device (4), said trigger mechanism (11) of the lift-car braking device (4) thus being actuated against a trigger resistance force. During testing, the limiter traction means (6) is functionally connected to the trigger mechanism (11) via a testing device (20) that makes it necessary, in order to overcome the trigger resistance force of the trigger mechanism (11), to have a greater tractive force in the limiter traction means (6) than would be the case if said limiter traction means (6) were connected to the trigger mechanism (11) directly.
