The invention relates to a method for ascertaining an operating and/or material parameter in an electric arc furnace (1), in which molten material (3), in particular steel, that is located in a bottom container (2) is heated with at least one electric arc (4), wherein the at least one electric arc (4) burns between at least one electrode (5) and the molten material (3). In order in particular to determine the electric arc shield, the steel bath temperature and/or the chemical composition of the steel bath in a cost-effective, simple and accurate manner, the invention makes provision for light from the at least one electric arc (4) and/or light from the molten material (3) to be captured using at least one optical capturing device (6, 7), for the light to be guided to at least one spectrometer (10, 11) using an optical system, in particular using at least one optical waveguide (8, 9), and evaluated in said spectrometer (10, 11) in order to determine the operating and/or material parameter.
