The present invention relates to a manufacturing method for a thermoelectric generator (TEG) with a vertical design and to a thermoelectric generator of this type. The method comprises the following steps: making available an electrically insulating substrate with a first substrate surface and a second substrate surface lying opposite the first, wherein electrically conductive layers are applied to both substrate surfaces; forming at least one first and one second cavity, wherein the first cavity is open towards the first substrate surface, and the second cavity is open towards the second substrate surface; introducing a first thermoelectric material into the at least one first cavity in order to form at least one thermoleg of a first type; introducing a second thermoelectric material into the at least one second cavity in order to form at least one thermoleg of a second type; and structuring the first and second electrically conductive layers in order to produce electrical connections between the thermolegs of the first and second type.
