The present invention relates to a method of communicating text messages between a first terminal connected by a communication network and at least one second terminal. Initially, the terminal communicates according to a first mode in which all characters of the approved message are transmitted upon acknowledgment of the message. The terminal then switches to a second mode in which each character of the message is transmitted following input on the keypad. Switching from the first mode to the second mode occurs when the terminal receives at least one signal indicative of the input of the character on the keyboard of the other terminal while the terminal is entering a message.
