The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for monitoring malfunction of power equipment by a frequency spectrum component. The method includes: a first step of simultaneously measuring a voltage and a current at a power transmission side and a power reception side; a second step of calculating a phase angle of a harmonic signal and a size of a harmonic signal for each frequency of the voltage and the current; and a third step of listing the phase angle of a harmonic signal and the size of a harmonic signal for each frequency to extract amplitude and phase spectrum and determining whether a precursor exists by applying a differential principle for each harmonic. According to the present invention, an initial step condition (precursor) of a malfunction can be detected before a large damage or a ripple effect occurs by the malfunction occurring at the power equipment so the method and the apparatus is useful for operation and maintenance of the power equipment.
