FIELD: electricity.;SUBSTANCE: registered emergency signal is transformed using Fourier transformation into rows of values of amplitudes and phase angles of harmonic components, proportionate to intensity of electric and magnetic field of the power transmission line of various frequencies, a vector sum is calculated for a row of complex values, in which the module is produced as a result of multiplication of the harmonic component amplitude of certain frequency, proportionate to electric field intensity, and the appropriate amplitude of harmonic component of the same frequency, proportionate to magnetic field intensity, and the argument is produced by subtraction from the harmonic component argument with the same frequency, proportionate to electric field intensity, of the corresponding argument of harmonic component, proportionate to magnetic field intensity. Direction towards a ground fault is determined by location of the vector of the produced vector sum on the complex plane. The area of ground fault in the power transmission line is detected by search direction change.;EFFECT: increased accuracy of fault area detection.;2 cl, 3 tbl, 4 dwg
