The invention relates to a method for operating a ''infotainment'' - system (12) of a motor vehicle (10), comprising the steps of: displaying a graphical user interface (22) with a plurality of respective functions of the motor vehicle (10) associated menu points (24) by means of a display device (14); detecting whether one of the displayed menu items (24) has been selected; if has been detected, that one of the displayed menu items (24) has been selected: outputting of an acoustic description (30) of the respective menu point (24); wherein the steps of the invention: detecting a viewing direction (28) of a vehicle occupant (26) of the motor vehicle (10); verifying the basis of the detected viewing direction (28) of the vehicle occupant (26), whether the vehicle occupant (26) during the selecting of the menu item (24) his view from the display device (14) had avoided; outputting of the acoustic description (30) of the respective menu point (24) only if has been detected, that the vehicle occupant (26) during the selecting of the respective menu point (24) his view from the display device (14) had averted. Furthermore, the invention relates to a ''infotainment'' - a system (12) for a motor vehicle (10).
