A method is provided for installing an add-on component 102 to a surface of a wind turbine blade 16, as well as the blade 16 with attached add-on component 102, and the add-on component as a stand-alone device. A slot 120 is defined in one or both of the pressure side or suction side surfaces of the add-on component 102. The adhesive side of strips 110 of a double-sided adhesive tape are attached onto either the surface of the wind turbine blade or an interior surface of the add-on component, the tape strips 110 having a release liner 112 on an opposite exposed side thereof. The tape strips 110 are arranged longitudinally along one or both sides of the slot 120, and each strip 110 has an extension tail 113 that extends beyond an edge of the add-on component when component is held at a desired position against the surface of the wind turbine blade. The extension tails 113 are pulled along the slot 120 at an angle such that that release liner 112 is removed through the slot 120 along the length of the tape strip 110 while maintaining the desired position of the add-on component 102 against the surface of the wind turbine blade 16.
