PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve energy conversion efficiency of water decomposition by light irradiation by using SiC.SOLUTION: There is provided a photoelectrode in which a SiC film is epitaxially grown on a SiC single crystal substrate, and further a metal electrode is formed on a surface on the opposite side to the SiC film on the SiC single crystal substrate; or otherwise a photoelectrode including SiC in which a film containing Pd or Pt as main constituents is formed on a surface having a contact with an electrolytic solution on the SiC film, in addition to constitution of the photoelectrode.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
