Optical signal generation can use different modulation schemes and multi-carrier schemes to increase the spectral efficiency of a single channel (carrier). Coherent detection techniques can be used to adapt to transmission requirements, spectrum availability and transmission distance. A scheme that allows the utilization of these capabilities of physical layer equipment such as transmitters, receivers and other network equipment (OXC, ROADM). The basic idea is to define an ODU format that allows for different possible spectral efficiencies for the same data rate, resulting in different bandwidth arrangements for the same traffic demand.
