Methods and apparatus for segregation of particles, including the segregation and the proliferation of fetal cells and stem cells. The disclosure relates to an apparatus to segregate particles based on their ability to flow through a passage intensified.At least some of the particles are accommodated in a passage bounded by a first step, but at least some of the particles are unable to pass through a narrow passage bounded by a second step, which results in segregation of the particles. Apparatus and methods described here can be used to segregate particles of a wide variety of types.For example, they can be used to segregate similar fetal cells from a sample of maternal blood, such as maternal arterial blood.
