Systems and methods for determining nonlinear pre-coding coefficients are described. In some embodiments, a method for determining nonlinear pre-coding coefficients for transmitting at least one line frequency tone includes obtaining a channel matrix relating a line input to a line output at at least one frequency tone. The method also includes computing a metric for each row in a subset of rows and determining a row order for the subset of rows based on the metric for each row in the subset of rows. The method also includes reordering channel array elements based on row order for the subset of rows to create a reordered channel array and determining nonlinear precoding coefficients based on the reordered channel array. This can provide a systematic way to select lines and balance bit rates between different lines.
