A laser peening method for improving compressive residual stress and hardness in AISI 321 stainless is provided. The method includes following step of: directing a laser pulse onto a surface area of the AISI 321 stainless steel. A duration of the laser pulse is at least 10 ns. The laser peened area in the AISI 321 stainless steel is at least 8 mm2. The laser pulse includes laser intensity of at least 5.97 GW cm-2. A spot diameter of the laser pulse is at least 0.8 mm.
