A self-retracting lifeline (100), comprising: a housing (101); a drum (118) operatively connected to the housing rotatably; a lifeline (130) having a first end (131) operatively connected to the drum, an intermediate portion (135) winding around the drum, and a second end (136); a stop member (137) operatively connected to the intermediate portion at a distance from the first end; and a bumper portion (140) operatively connected to the housing, the bumper portion includes a hole (152) through which the lifeline is extended; characterized in that the hole is smaller than the stop member to prevent passage of the stop member through the hole and out of the housing, at least a portion of the bumper portion is configured to be disconnected from the housing when a force of at least 204.11 kg (450 pounds) on the bumper portion to allow the stop member to pass out of the housing.
