SMOOTH, STATELESS CLIENT MEDIA STREAMING

An adaptive streaming system is describedherein that provides a stateless connection between theclient and server for streaming media playback in which thedata is formatted in a manner that allows the client to makedecisions and react more quickly to changing network conditions.The client requests uniform chunks of media fromthe server that include a portion of the media. The adaptivestreaming system requests portions of a media file or of alive streaming event in small-sized chunks each having adistinguished URL. This allows streaming media data to becached by existing Internet cache infrastructure. Eachchunk contains metadata information that describes the encodingof the chunk and media content for playback by theclient. The server may provide chunks in multiple encodingsso that the client can switch quickly to chunks of a differentbit rate or playback speed.
