A distributed battery management system that utilizes circuit boards as direct current busses for primary power in large-scale battery energy storage systems. The distributed battery management system comprises a plurality of battery cells and a circuit board having one or more conducting traces mounted on its surface and arranged such that at least one conducting trace establishes electrical contact to the plurality of battery cells in a series or a parallel configuration and serves as a primary power conduit for one or more of the battery cells.
