Green Sugar GmbH has extended the Bergius process of wood saccharification in such a way that highly pure silicates can be obtained on the basis of siliceous biomass. The Bergius process is generally based on treating the biomass with hydrochloric acid (see patent DE 927139). The detailed description of the adaptation of the Bergius process to silicate-containing biomasses is not part of the description here. Important to the process is that the displacement of the acid from the hydrolysis residue (eg lignin) is effected by means of an agent free of metals, metal ions or other metal-containing substances. Rather, it has been found that after combustion of the residues of such treated biomass high-purity silicates remain as ash ( 99%). The suitability of these vegetable silicates as an additive in plastics and elastomers, paints and varnishes and glues and sealants has not been described.
