An apparatus (2) and a method for finding, from among a set of given images, a most similar given image compared to a workpiece image, the method comprising: inputting (10) the given images and the workpiece image; calculating a horizontal 1D projection and a vertical 1D projection from each of the given images, storing the 1D projections in a database, calculating a horizontal 1D projection and a vertical 1D projection from the workpiece image, calculating a similarity measure for each given image from comparing the horizontal projection of the workpiece image to the horizontal projection of the each given image and comparing the vertical projection of the workpiece image to the vertical projection of the each given image, and selecting as the the most similar image that one of the given images that has the highest similarity measure.
