PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To disclose a method and device for detecting the fundamental factor of an alarm pattern in a process control system.;SOLUTION: One exemplary method includes acquiring process control data generated in a process control system during a history period. The process control data includes alarm data associated with an alarm to be started during the history period. The exemplary method includes generating an alarm start time line during the history period. The alarm start time line includes an icon expressing the alarm for visually expressing the temporal relationship of the start of the alarm, and one of the icons expresses the alarm which has no longer been started.
