These are methods for direct engraving of metals and single crystal superalloys. The method may include: heating a substrate (23) positioned on a base plate (22) to a predetermined temperature using a first heater (24); use a laser (26) to form a melt deposit (34) on a substrate surface (23); introducing a superalloy powder (32) into the melt tank (34); measuring the temperature of the melt tank (34); receive the temperature measured on a controller (40); and using an auxiliary heat source (41) in communication with the controller (40) to adjust the temperature of the melt tank (34). the predetermined temperature is below the substrate melting point. laser 26 and baseplate 22 are movable relative to each other, wherein laser 26 is used to direct metal deposition. an apparatus (20) is also generally provided for direct engraving of metals and single crystal superalloys.
