The method of determining the snow water content in a snow layer is based on automatic measurement of the time course of the snow height, air temperature and the temperature profile of the snow layer by means of at least one device (1) which sends data by means of a continuous or periodic data connection to the central computer, and, in the central computer containing the appropriate hardware and software elements, calculation of the snow water content based on the data received from at least one device (1) is performed. The device (1) substantially comprises the vertically oriented sensor line (2), which consists of the optical sensors (3) regularly spaced from one another, and which is connected to the control unit (6), wherein the temperature sensors (4) are regularly included in this sensor line (2).
