The present invention relates to a method of treating patients having a history of atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter, or current atrial fibrillation or flutter, said method preventing cardiovascular hospitalization and comprising administrating dronedarone or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof in the dose of 800 mg once or several times a day with a morning and an evening meal, wherein said medicament is contra-indicated for patients with severe heart failure, wherein severe heart failure is indicated by the following: worsening symptoms of heart failure at rest or with minimal exertion, current symptoms or history of congestive heart failure at rest, or symptoms of heart failure with minimal exertion within the last month, NYHA Class IV, NYHA Class III within the last month, recent decompensation as indicated by the need for hospitalization or intravenous therapy, recent decompensation requiring hospitalization or intravenous therapy for the treatment of heart failure. The present method allows to decrease the frequency of cardiovascular hospitalization and mortality in patients with associated risk factors.
